I’m so happy to have author Carol McClain on my blog today! She will be sharing info on her newest release, Yesterday’s Poison, and a little bit about the theme of her book – Forgiveness. This is something to which we can all relate, isn’t it?
Welcome, Carol!
Have you ever fallen in love—with a place?
For me, that place is Rensselaerville, NY. Located in Albany County in central New York, this hamlet is teeny and quaint beyond belief. Scarce cell service and scarcer amenities, make this area isolated. It’s a trip back to simpler times.
Each fall, my husband and I visit a good friend Paul. He puts us up in a small cabin on a pond. As Neil and Paul renew old friendships, I get to wander a town baptized in the Dutch culture that settled the area.
On the outskirts of this hamlet of 1800 people is Huyck Preserve. This research area gives hikers access to over two thousand acres of trails and waterways. For me, the crown jewel is Rensselaer Falls. It flows from Lake Myosotis and cascades over one hundred-twenty feet of rock. The area is pristine and secluded, an introvert’s paradise.
Huyck Preserve is a place to get lost in. Which is exactly what my protagonist, Torie Sullivan, does in Yesterday’s Poison does—but not in the pleasurable manner I had.
But what’s a story without a theme? Pretty words (hopefully spelled correctly) dotting a couple of hundred pages.
Over the last several years, I’ve also fallen in love with forgiveness.
We know Christ has forgiven us. If we’re honest, there’s a plethora of stuff in our lives we’d rather forget. God does not hold us accountable for these confessed wrongs. In essence, He forgets our sins. Isaiah 43:25 says, “I, I am he who blots out your transgression for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”
As Christ forgave us, we must forgive others. Some things are easy(ish). If your friend steals your recipe and wins a cooking contest, you can find the magnanimity to forgive. How about someone who abused you? Robbed you? Stole your spouse?
God wants us to forgive. It has nothing to do with condoning the wrong. Forgiveness sets us free. It removes the sting of the offense and enables us to move on and live our lives as God planned from the foundations of the universe.
Thus Yesterday’s Poison combines my love of Scripture and place. When you read it, you love both as well.
Yesterday’s Poison is on my TBR (to-be-read!) pile! I’m looking forward to much more from Carol McClain!
Book Blurb
After her boyfriend betrays her, Torie Sullivan careens into a ditch in a drunken fury. Paramedic Adam Benedict rescues the unconscious woman, then realizes she’s one of the middle school bullies who tormented him twelve years ago. The encounter rips open scars he thought had healed.
While kayaking one morning, Adam discovers Torie bathing in the frigid waters of Hookskill Preserve. He then learns she’s living in a lean-to in the forested preserve. Despite his hatred for her, Adam’s innate compassion won’t allow him to leave Torie in the wilds of Albany County. He offers her a secure, private room in his minuscule cabin.
When tragedy strikes Adam’s family, his girlfriend Maya Vitale gives Torie a room in her apartment. Torie envies Maya’s idyllic life, unaware she, too, hides a dark and shameful past.
Each character drinks yesterday’s poison. Their friendships intertwine their lives and expose their toxic pasts. They must learn to forgive the unpardonable.
