Most of you know I’m a musician. I’m one of those people who look forward to choir practice every week because those are “my peeps.”
It’s not Halloween yet, but we’ve been working on our musical, “All is Calm, All is Bright” since September, and now we’re down to five rehearsals.
Some years, by the time Christmas-music-listening-season gets here, I’m already tired of Christmas music, but I never tire of singing and playing praises. It’s just what I do, and a huge part of whom I am.
Why do we sing praises to our Lord? Why does music have such power to stir our hearts?
Psalm 150 (NKJ) puts it all out there:
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
I love that the psalmist had an awesome praise band backing him up!
Next time you’re at church, or listening to the radio, or just humming a tune, think about what Paul told the church in Ephesus.
Talk with each other much about the Lord, quoting psalms and hymns and singing sacred songs, making music in your hearts to the Lord. Always give thanks for everything to our God and Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20 TLB
It’s not a suggestion. Even if you simply make a joyful noise in singing God’s praises, remember that it’s in our Instruction Manual- The Bible.
