What are you writing today?
A grocery list?
A report for work?
A thank-you note for that gift you received months ago?
Have you planned and organized your writing today?
We all write SOMETHING every day, whether we realize it or not. Take that grocery list, for example. Some people just write the bare minimum on the list. That’s usually me, unless I’m trying a new recipe or sending my husband. Then I go into details. If I’m not organized, how can someone else follow my list?
This weekend my author friend Erin Howard and I are leading a writing workshop at the Crittenden County Public Library. We’ll be exploring writing from a few different angles, and answering questions about the publication process that we’ve experienced. If you’re interested in writing and in the area, come on up! Part of that process is organization, and I’m still struggling.
Currently, I’m working on three different projects. Editing Carolina Grace, starting a new series, and plotting a novella for a collection for next fall. Sometimes it’s difficult to stay focused. I’m also still in the process of getting my new office space organized.
So, how does a writer get themselves organized? Currently, I have the “pile” and “list” method of organization. That works great (temporarily!) for physical paper and objects, and even for a to-do list. But what about organizing the online stuff? The marketing? The blog posts?
I have some ideas.
First, I have a list of file categories that I need: Writing, Church, Ken-Ten Writers Group, and Friends of the Library. I’m involved in those four areas, so those are the areas I seem to have papers in random spots. Gotta get rid of the idea of RANDOM.
For the online stuff, I have to organize my time more than anything. Last week I started the free trial version of Hootsuite, which can be used to post on social media as far out as necessary. I’m still learning on it, but so far, I’ve been able to post something on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook just about every day. It will get easier as I learn more about it.
Mondays I play catch up, because Sundays are busy with worship and church activities. On Mondays I post a devotional blog and write blogs for Wednesdays and Fridays, scheduling them for later in the week. One of these days I hope to get more than a few days ahead, but I’m an organizational work-in-progress!
What are YOUR organizational tips, writing or just LIFE-STUFF? I want to hear from YOU!
Happy Wednesday!
